Trinseo expects to use its dissolution technology to enable industrial-scale production of recycled polycarbonate (PC) by 2025

Trinseo CEO Frank Bozich recently stated that Trinseo can use its dissolution technology to achieve industrial-scale production of recycled polycarbonate (PC) by 2025.

Frank Bozich said: "With this continued investment, and our ability to repurpose idle PC production lines in Stad, Germany, for this process, we expect to be able to achieve industrial-scale production with low capital expenditure starting in 2025." He is The remarks were made during an earnings call.

Frank Bozich said Trinseo has set up a pilot factory in Terneuzen, the Netherlands, and is producing samples of recycled PCs for customers.

Trinseo's dissolution technology relies on solvents to recover PC from mixed waste, which may include metal, glass or other types of plastics.

Because Trinseo can use waste as raw material, industrial-scale production costs are likely to be lower than traditional raw PC production methods.

Frank Bozich said the PC extracted through Trinseo's dissolving technology is comparable to the original PC. Recycled PC contains lower levels of bisphenol A (BPA), which may open up some new application areas.

Trinseo's process emits three times less carbon dioxide (CO2) than traditional PC production. This process is suitable for recycling PCs from consumer electronics or automotive parts.

Trinseo can recycle low-quality, substandard or end-of-life automotive headlights and return them to customers so they can use the material to make new automotive headlights. Trinseo does this with automotive interior door panels and consumer electronics products that meet customer quality requirements.

Trinseo envisions closed-loop partnerships with automotive, electronics and consumer product manufacturers.
